It Can Happen to You

"Salvation."

"It can happen to you"

"Inquire within!"

Upon a church marquee
on the outskirts of Biloxi,
came the answer to eternity.
Peace waited for me.

Late Sunday afternoon heat
pierced my windshield,
causing me to squint and sweat
as I drove through
gathering thunderstorms.

I angled air conditioning vents,
and adjusted knobs,
hoping to bring some coolness,
thinking how hell hath no heat
like Dixie in August.

My back and shirt
stuck to the vinyl seats
in my old mustang
and my hands were hot
upon the black steering wheel.

I thought of trading
my eternal soul
for a cool drink of beer
at the Quarterdeck Lounge,
and how refreshed I would be.

How refreshing and easy
is a quick beer.
Better the eternal quenching
of the Lord's spring of water,
welling into an eternal life.

Upon a church marquee
on the outskirts of Biloxi,
came the answer to eternity.
Peace waited for me.

"Salvation."

"It can happen to you"

"Inquire within!"
